Group Volunteers

IHS is the perfect place for organizations and groups to cultivate team building.

Requirements for Groups:

  • IHS defines a volunteer group as a minimum of four people
  • Independent youth volunteers must be at least 15 years of age
  • Children age 14 and below must be accompanied by an adult and are only eligible for certain volunteer events to ensure safety
  • A signed Hold Harmless Statement must be submitted by each volunteer
  • Volunteers under the age of 18 will also need a signature from a parent or guardian

Below are just a few of the different activities available at IHS that your group may be interested in:

Meal Program

IHS serves 3 hot meals a day (between 600 and 700 meals a day), 365 days of the year. Meals are served at both shelters, but all on-site meal preparation occurs at the men’s shelter kitchen. Group are welcome to provide and prepare meals either on-site in our kitchen or at their own facility.

All volunteers will be given food preparation safety guidelines to assist in this activity.

How you can help:

  • Contact IHS to set a date (Ana: 447-2904)
  • Decide on the extent of your service. Options are:
    • Simple meal service – you and your group show up at IHS to serve the meal to our homeless guests. This option has a time commitment of about one hour. Meals are served at 7:00am, 12:00pm, and 5:00pm (women’s shelter)/6:00pm (men’s shelter).
    • Provide or financially underwrite part of the meal (financially underwriting the main dish for both shelters costs $350) and serve the meal. You can help prepare part of the meal or simply serve.
    • Both prepare and serve the meal at IHS. This requires a time commitment of 3+ hours.
    • Provide all food or financially underwrite entire meal for both shelters (about $700), and serve the meal at IHS. This is our greatest need!

Shelter Cleaning

IHS strives to keep the two shelters clean and hygienic for the guests who are staying here. While many of our guests help with the daily chores, we are grateful for additional hardworking volunteer groups to help with cleaning the shelters on a daily basis.

How you can help:

  • As a group, help with hands-on shelter-cleaning: mopping, sweeping, dusting, scrubbing, etc.
  • Painting
  • Landscaping in our garden areas

Kokua Korner / Sort donations

Many of the people who come to IHS have been living in cars, beaches, or on the streets for months. Some people have only the clothes that they are wearing, and may not have slippers or shoes when they first come to IHS. We help to ensure that our guests have adequate clothing and footwear — and you can help!

How you can help:

  • Conduct a drive on the behalf of IHS using our community drive registration form
  • Spend some time sorting donations
  • Restock racks in Kokua Korner

Tackle a Fundraising Event

IHS is a registered 501(c) 3, so donations are tax deductible. There are many creative and fun ways your group can help IHS with financial contributions, from hosting dinners to bake sales and even putting on a race for the shelter.

How you can help:

  • Host a special event for IHS (contact volunteer@ihs-hawaii.org for more details)
  • Host a car wash, bake sale, concert, silent auction, etc and donate proceeds to IHS
  • Spend creative time with the children and/or adults with an arts and crafts workshop
  • Host a birthday party for our shelter guests

Volunteer groups should contact IHS to schedule a volunteer date, by emailing volunteer@ihs-hawaii.org or by calling (808) 447-2842.
